When you think about drones in national parks, you may think of capturing beautiful aerial shots of some of the most amazing places in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But unfortunately, flying drones<\/a> in national parks isn\u2019t allowed.<\/p>\n

Since June 2014, the U.S. National Park Service (NPS)<\/a> has had a ban on the flying of drones in national parks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This ban applies to the 23 trails, 60 rivers, and 417 national parks that the NPS manages. The ban had been issued as Policy Memorandum 14-05 on June 16, 2014, and states:<\/p>\n

Launching, operating, or landing an aircraft from or on lands and waters administered by the National Park Service within the boundaries of National parks is prohibited except as approved in writing by the superintendent.<\/p>\n

This memorandum was issued under national law 36 CFR \u00a7 1.5, which covers closures and public use limits for federal parks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From a legal aspect, the FAA is the only authority that has jurisdiction over the national airspace. Yet, other government entities proceed to make their drone regulations despite the FAA\u2019s sole authority within the airspace.<\/p>\n

The FAA has issued its restrictions over specific NPS sites, including Mount Rushmore and these other U.S. landmarks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Is The Ban Applies To FAA-Certified Drone Pilot?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The prohibition on drones in national parks is a blanket prohibition that applies to both drone pilots and recreational, with no differentiation made between the two.<\/p>\n
